What is HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser?

HALO® is a hybrid fractional laser developed by Sciton that combines two wavelengths in the same treatment session. The 2940nm wavelength (ablative) precisely vaporizes the outer layer of skin to address surface texture and pore size. The 1470nm wavelength (non-ablative) reaches deeper into the dermis to stimulate collagen and treat pigmentation. Delivering both wavelengths simultaneously allows HALO® to address surface and deeper concerns in one session, with significantly less downtime than fully ablative resurfacing.

The treatment is tunable; providers adjust the depth and density of each wavelength to match the patient’s skin type, concerns, and tolerance for downtime. That tunability is also why outcomes vary widely between practices. Settings that are too conservative may produce only modest improvement, while overly aggressive settings increase the risk of complications. The most consistent results come from providers experienced with both wavelengths and trained in protocol selection per skin type.

Eligibility

Most healthy adults with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV are candidates for HALO®. Patients with active infections, recent isotretinoin use, certain autoimmune conditions, or pregnancy should not proceed. 

Recovery & Downtime

Expect three to seven days of social downtime. Skin moves through redness, swelling, and small dark spots (called MENDs) before revealing smoother texture beneath.

Before HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser

Your provider reviews medical history, skin type, current skincare, and aesthetic goals. Most patients begin pre-treatment topicals (sometimes including hydroquinone or retinoids) two to four weeks ahead. Antiviral medication may be prescribed for patients with a history of cold sores.

During HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser

After 45 to 60 minutes of topical numbing, your provider passes the HALO® handpiece across the treatment area in calibrated motions. The device tracks coverage in real time to ensure even treatment. Most patients describe warmth and prickling rather than sharp pain.

After HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser

Expect redness, warmth, and swelling for the first 48 hours. Small dark spots (MENDs) appear on day two or three and shed within a week. Avoid sun exposure, heavy exercise, and active skincare ingredients for several days. Results develop over four to twelve weeks.

Potential Risks and Side Effects from HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser

Pigmentation Changes

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur, particularly in patients with deeper skin tones treated at aggressive settings. A skilled provider screens by Fitzpatrick type and adjusts wavelength depth and density accordingly. Fitzpatrick types V-VI may be better suited to alternative laser options.

Prolonged Redness or Healing

Some patients experience redness lasting longer than the typical seven days, particularly with deeper treatment settings. Mild residual redness can usually be camouflaged with mineral makeup after day five. Strict sun avoidance and prescribed aftercare significantly reduce risk and duration.

Infection or Cold Sore Reactivation

Open, healing skin is vulnerable for nearly a week. Bacterial infections are uncommon when patients follow strict aftercare. Cold sore reactivation is a known risk for patients with prior history; prophylactic antivirals are commonly prescribed before treatment.
